IJPC: Supporting Quality Compounding and Documenting the Past and the Future

The International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding (IJPC) completes 19 years of publication this year. It has been an exciting 19 years and we look forward to the future in supporting quality pharmaceutical compounding.

Communication among compounding pharmacists has greatly increased through IJPC publications, products and activities, including:

·         IJPC Print and Digital

·         Compounders Network List

·         Weekly newsletters (Editorials, news-briefs, etc)

·         Monthly newsletters (Science and Technology)

·         Compounding textbooks and resources

·         Participation in educational seminars

·         Participation in training programs

·         Responding to queries daily

Today, there is really no reason that most questions related to compounding cannot be answered from the resources at IJPC. There are articles and issues available for immediate download at and formulas that are referenced with beyond-use dates and SOPs available on

IJPC print/digital is a “referenced” and a “reference” journal. Articles are “referenced” and it is designed to be kept and referred to as needed. Each issue contains feature articles, 2-4 peer reviewed scientific studies, ten formulations, series on the basics of nonsterile compounding and sterile compounding, quality assurance and much more. It also was the first pharmacy journal to include Augmented Reality experiences to broaden the scope of the journal.

is the world’s largest database for pharmaceutical compounding. It contains over 3,000 documented formulas, over 1,000 ‘Named” formulas and over 1,000 cosmetic formulas, over 350 Standard Operating Procedures.

IJPC is abstracted by MEDLINE/Pubmed, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature Print Index and Database, Chemical Abstracts, Elsevier Bibliographic Databases, including Compendex, EMBASE, EMNursing, GEOBASE, Mosby Yearbooks, Scopus and others.

In summary, the first 19 years of IJPC have been anything but dull. Between the scientific and technological advances in compounding, new therapies for patients, drug shortages of commercial products from manufacturers, new laws and regulations, the adverse influences of the insurance companies and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), and seemingly impossible restraints involving controlled drug substances, short beyond-use dates, sometimes over-active/over-extending regulatory agencies (federal and state) and standards-setting bodies, new challenges seem to arise and older ones are resolved.

As IJPC gears up for its 20th anniversary, we invite any subscribers who have been with us since 1997 to share stories about how IJPC has helped you in your practice and share the evolution of your practice. We will be publishing some spotlights about our subscribers. Please send your short stories to Lauren Bernick with the subject: Subscriber spotlight.

It has been said for many years that “compounding pharmacists are problem-solvers”; this is true and it looks like we will continue to do so in the future.
