USA Today declared that compounding pharmacies supplied tainted medications to patients by siting 30 warning letters issued since 2012. It fails to mention that 267 warning letters were issued in 2014 and the 30 equate to approximately 10 in 2014 (3.75%). This does not exonerate pharmacies that distributed adulterated products. However, it misrepresents the vast majority of compounding pharmacies who retain high ethical standards and practices. The key to success is to follow USP <795> and <797>, which contain the information needed to remain compliant in today’s regulatory maze. For pharmacies wanting to register as an outsourcing facility, recognize that money and expertise need to be abundant for success. In essence, the few compounding pharmacies that provided adulterated preparations are not indicative of the majority who are honest and competent. Certainly this majority does not deserve to be discredited by the likes of USA Today. Frank Settineri Veracorp LLC
