Another Manufacturer Letter – This Time About Veterinary Compounding

August 21, 2012 -- Just yesterday, IACP became aware of letters being sent to compounders by Boehringer Ingelheim about their product Prascend (pergolide).  The manufacturer cautions all pharmacists that any compounding of pergolide for veterinary use must only be done using their finished drug product and not the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API).  If you’ve received that letter and want to know the specifics, contact us at

This is interesting timing because yesterday IACP also received an invitation to participate as a panelist at the upcoming Federal Trade Commission (FTC) workshop on the veterinary prescription marketplace, scheduled for October 2, 2012 in Washington, DC.

“Compounders have excellent professional relationships with veterinarians, far more so than most pharmacists do,” says Sarah Dodge, IACP Vice President of Government Affairs.  “Even so, there are significant problems with how some manufacturers exclude legitimate, licensed pharmacies from purchasing their products, essentially putting a monopoly on commercial products that only permit vets to order and dispense their medicines.  The FTC, as the government agency responsible for ensuring an open marketplace, is examining those and other arrangements and whether or not manufacturers have arbitrarily restricted competition.”

If your pharmacy has been unable to order, purchase or dispense veterinary medicines from manufacturers or your wholesalers, e-mail that information [drug product, when you tried to obtain it, company name, any reason why you were refused] to by September 15, 2012.  While your personal information will be kept confidential, your Academy wants to use those real-life examples at the FTC’s workshop for all to hear.
