Meningitis Outbreak Update

10/11/2012 -- According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the fungal meningitis crisis has left 14 people dead and 137 others infected in 10 states. The outbreak is linked to tainted methylprednisolone acetate steroid injections from the New England Compounding Center (NECC) in Framingham, Mass. Contaminants were found in an unopened vial during an inspection of NECC. Three lots of single-dose vials (17,676 single vials) of methylprednisolone acetate were sent to 76 facilities in 23 states were recalled.

States with reported infections
Florida (six cases, one death), Indiana (15 cases), Maryland (nine cases, one death), Michigan (28 cases, three deaths), Minnesota (three cases), North Carolina (two cases), Ohio (one case), Tennessee (44 cases, six deaths) Virginia (27 cases, one death) and New Jersey (two cases).

States that received injections
California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas and West Virginia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) currently are investigating the situation. To date, an official report on the exact cause has not been released.
