Drug Compounding Bills Scheduled for Massachusetts Hearing

On the heels of a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak linked to a Framingham compounding pharmacy, lawmakers plan next week to hold a public hearing on a slate of bills aimed at further regulating the industry. The Joint Committee on Public Health announced plans for a noon hearing on April 2, 2013, in Room B-1 on bills addressing, "state oversight, licensing and safety issues at compounding pharmacies," according to committee co-chair Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez. Compounding industry legislation vaulted to the top of the to-do lists of legislative leaders last year due to the serious problems stemming from the New England Compounding Center. Among the bills scheduled for next week's hearing is one (H 39) sponsored by Gov. Deval Patrick. Dr. Lauren Smith, commissioner of the Department of Public Health, which regulates compounding pharmacies, is among those scheduled to testify, along with officials from the industry and members of the Special Commission on the Oversight of Compounding Pharmacies. IACP will keep our Members apprised on any developments.
