DEA Revises Announcement Regarding Renewal Applications

Reversing an announcement previously published on the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) website, starting January 2017, DEA will no longer send its second renewal notification by mail. Instead, an electronic reminder to renew will be sent to the email address associated with the DEA registration. Online renewal application here.

At this time, DEA will otherwise retain its current policy and procedures with respect to renewal and reinstatement of registration. This policy is as follows:

• If a renewal application is submitted in a timely manner prior to expiration, the registrant may continue operations, authorized by the registration, beyond the expiration date until final action is taken on the application.

• DEA allows the reinstatement of an expired registration for one calendar month after the expiration date. If the registration is not renewed within that calendar month, an application for a new DEA registration will be required.

• Regardless of whether a registration is reinstated within the calendar month after expiration, federal law prohibits the handling of controlled substances or List 1 chemicals for any period of time under an expired registration.

FDA's Proposed Rule for "Positive List" is Published

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced last week that its first round of creating the “positive list” via the rulemaking channels has become official. There is a 90-day comment period, meaning, we will have until around March 16, 2017 to submit comments.

Please click here to view FDA’s document.

IACP is thoroughly reviewing the comments, and will publish to the Membership its submitted comments. For a refresher on how these lists are created, please see the article IACP’s Executive Vice President John Voliva, RPh wrote about the lists here.

DQSA Coalition Sends Letter to the President-elect's Transition Team

The Drug Quality & Security Act (DQSA) Coalition, founded and led by the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP) sent a letter this week to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's Transition Team.

From the letter:" The undersigned organizations represent patient advocates, physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers who are united in a mission to preserve patient safety and access to needed compounded medications, pursuant to state and federal laws and regulations. Since 2014, our organizations have been meeting and working together as part of a coalition of over 30 organizations (the DQSA Coalition) to provide input to the FDA, to State Boards of Pharmacy, and to the Congress about our concerns with the Agency’s implementation of the Drug Quality and Security Act (“DQSA”, P.L. 113-54) and to seek solutions that maintain a balance between public safety and patient access to compounded medications."

Help Keep Compounding Front & Center in 2017!

IACP is making real progress through our DQSA Coalition as well as your efforts in educating your respective congressional representatives. We have a lot more before us in the New Year! Keeping IACP and pharmacy compounding top of mind on Capitol Hill is an ongoing challenge and a considerable investment. There’s an old saying in D.C. – “if you don’t have a seat at the table, you’re on the menu.”

On average, IACP spends $1,000 a day just in lobbying and regulatory surveillance. And, when you consider the legislative/regulatory environment of the last several years – this investment has become even more critical and costly.Click here to view a few of our milestones.

Would You be Willing to Contribute to IACP’s One Fund? Please help us maintain the momentum by contributing today. Your support will allow us to represent your pharmacy’s and your patients’ issues on the Hill! Click here to contribute.
